Abstract

Planation of dissolution origin was studied on the marble on Diego de Almagro Island. For this, we analysed the relationship between wind speed and the CO2 content of water, as well as the relationship between wind shelter and dissolution. The latter was studied through analysis of the theoretical relationship between the different sizes of roches moutonnées and the expansion of wind shelter (coinciding with the expansion of the dissolution basin) at different wind speeds. Due to the intensive wind effect, it can be stated that, based on the size of features in the case of adequate wind shelter, the intensity of dissolution is at least ten times greater than the dissolution of plain surfaces without wind shelter. Owing to the wind effect, widespread surface dissolution takes place both in wind shelters and outside them on plain surfaces (former glacial erosion surfaces). As a result, a double planation surface (corrosion plain) has developed: an older one, formed by the dissolution of a former glacial erosion surface, and another associated with localized dissolution of wind-shadow areas, represented by the floors of dissolution basins. The development of the two corrosion plains is mutually influenced, with each affecting the other.
